Residents clean up streets in Tura as normalcy gradually returns after days of unrest

HEADLINES

Shillong: As normalcy slowly returns to Tura, residents have begun stepping out to clear the streets following days of unrest linked to the upcoming elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).

Videos from the town show men and women using brooms and shovels to remove stones, burnt materials and other debris left behind after the protests, in an effort to restore order and cleanliness in the area.

It maybe noted, the violence reportedly began after a former Phulbari MLA, Esmatur Mominin filed his nomination papers at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in West Garo Hills, sparking protests over demands that only tribals should be allowed to contest and vote in the GHADC elections.

The clashes left several people injured, while properties were damaged, shops looted and a number of vehicles (including government vehicles) set ablaze.

There were also reports of threats against Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, including plans to burn his residence and attack his family.

On Wednesday, the Chief Minister appealed for calm and announced that the GHADC elections would be postponed. Church leaders in the region have also urged the public to maintain peace.

According to reports, the situation in Tura and surrounding areas remains calm for now as residents work together to restore normalcy.
