Public Meeting to Decide on Controversial Mandir Construction in Khliehriat

HEADLINES

State Excise Minister Bah Kyrmen Shylla announced that a meeting will be held to gather input from various groups regarding the opposition to the construction of a mandir in Khliehriat. Bah Kyrmen, who is also the local MLA, stated that the decision to allow or deny the construction will rest with the public.

Following complaints, the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills halted the proposed construction and organized discussions with opposing groups. Today, the KSU East Jaintia Hills met with Bah Kyrmen to express strong opposition to the mandir’s construction.

Bah Kyrmen noted that, according to the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act, religious structures can be built on government land, but the final decision lies with the public and the local community. The KSU leaders emphasized that their opposition is based on the principle that government land belongs to the public, regardless of religious affiliations.
