Only two days to apply for MBBS at USTM; 64 of 150 seats reserved for State students

HEADLINES

The Minister incharge of Health and Family Welfare, Ampareen Lyngdoh said on that government-funded MBBS students will be required to pay a nominal fee, which can be received through scholarship.

However, the government’s decision to accept online applications for only two days—March 28 and 29, 2024—could pose challenges for applicants. The candidate list is set to be released on March 30, with students needing to confirm their admissions by making payments on March 31 and fulfilling all requirements by November 3.

Lyngdoh explained that these payment structures are mandated by the Government of India and vary by state, noting that the government sends doctors only to government colleges. The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has proposed a revision of student fees to the state government, which is currently under consideration.

The state has allocated 64 MBBS seats for State quota, with 25 seats will be funded by the government and the remainder requiring smaller fees. USTM is set to enroll 150 students in its MBBS program at the PA Sangma International Medical College and Health, including 23 seats for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and 63 for management quota students.

So far, around 200 students have applied for the doctorate program, which Lyngdoh hailed as a significant achievement for the state.

Student selection will be based on NEET examination performance and applicable quotas. The government is awaiting the Governor’s approval of the ordinance related to this initiative. When asked about the start date for classes following the ordinance’s approval, Lyngdoh confirmed that classes will begin as scheduled.

The medical college has received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
