Shillong: The Sordar of Nonghali, Hunboklang Mynsong, has denied allegations that the village prevented members of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Par Umkhen from attending the recent public hearing on the proposed waste dumping site. He said a large pandal was built specifically to accommodate participants.
According to Mynsong, those stopped midway were individuals with “a single agenda” who came not to participate constructively but to create disruption. “What is the purpose of bringing crowds from 15 other villages that have no direct connection to this project? If they truly wanted to speak, their leaders could have come without trying to politicise the hearing,” he argued.
The Sordar added that Nonghali had studied the project before agreeing to host it and that a clear assurance was made that the Umkhen river would not be affected. He pointed out that unlike Mawlai Marten, which became a pollution hotspot due to poor planning and limited space, the Nonghali site is spread over 200 acres and will employ modern technology.
He stressed that the public hearing was held peacefully, with both supporters and opponents voicing their opinions without disruption.
