Shillong: The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) has decided to maintain its peaceful protest regarding the reinstatement of Adhoc teachers under the deficit system, stating that recent government assurances have not yet addressed their concerns.
Speaking to reporters, FASTOM Vice President Sanborn Jungai said that Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui had expressed sympathy for the plight of Adhoc teachers. However, the minister did not provide a clear response regarding their demand for reinstatement under the deficit system or pattern. Jungai added that although the minister highlighted that since the introduction of the Meghalaya Education Grant (MEG), the government has received inputs from school authorities, teachers and other stakeholders on the issue, the way forward is still uncertain.
The minister reportedly assured that he would meet with the stakeholders after the Puja holidays to discuss the matter further.
Despite this, FASTOM teachers, who have been protesting peacefully at Madan Malki and in Tura since earlier this week, have called on the government to reinstate Adhoc teachers under the deficit system.
Acknowledging the lack of concrete assurance from the minister, FASTOM has resolved to continue their peaceful protest until the government provides a firm and timely response. Jungai also noted that teachers, both men and women, have expressed their determination to sustain the protest at Madan Malki until their demands are met.
