Shillong: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Par Umkhen has strongly opposed the state government’s move to set up a waste dumping ground at Nonghali, stating it would severely impact the Umkhen river, a vital water source for local communities.
Synjuk president Supar Rngaid expressed disappointment at the government’s decision, stressing that residents will resist any attempt to threaten the ecological health of the river. He said the body will soon send a memorandum to the government.
He further alleged that villagers of Nonghali deployed volunteers to block entry of those wishing to attend the public hearing, despite the district authorities issuing notices inviting citizens to participate. “We were not given the chance to voice our concerns. This kind of exclusion is unacceptable,” Rngaid said.
The Synjuk has vowed to continue pressing the government to scrap the project and protect the Umkhen river.
