Tokyo/Shillong: In a historic step towards international workforce mobility, Meghalaya and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on healthcare, caregiving, hospitality, IT, and other sectors.
The agreement was formalised at the Indian Embassy in Tokyo between the Government of Meghalaya and Asean One Japan, in the presence of Meghalaya’s Labour, Employment & Skill Development Minister Shakliar Warjri.
“This MoU is not just an agreement—it is a gateway for our young people to access international careers while deepening the cultural and economic ties between Meghalaya and Japan,” Warjri said.
Under the initiative, Japan will support training and overseas placement of Meghalaya’s youth, beginning with 500 candidates in the first year and expanding to 5,000 over the next five years. Training will include Japanese language and cultural integration to prepare workers for their roles.
The MoU stems from Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s official visit to Japan in April 2025, where he presented his vision of building international career opportunities for Meghalaya’s youth.
Asean One Japan Chairman and CEO Toshiaki Nishikawa, who also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit, has been instrumental in building workforce mobility solutions between India and Japan.
Officials described the agreement as a milestone in India–Japan cooperation on skill development and global employment, aligning with India’s vision of becoming a Global Skill Hub.
