Meghalaya HC directs Status Quo in Veterinary Officer recruitment amid nepotism allegations

HEADLINES

Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court has ordered that the recruitment process for the post of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer remain on hold following a petition accusing the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) of nepotism.

The bench, headed by Acting Chief Justice H.S. Thangkhiew, passed the order on Monday and listed the petition for further hearing on September 25 to consider the interim relief sought by the petitioners. “Till the next date, however, status quo will be maintained,” the court stated.

The directive comes after the bench sought a response from the respondents, giving them two days to obtain necessary instructions.

Petitioners allege that the MPSC’s decision to conduct direct interviews for the post violates the Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service Rules, 2000. According to Rule 7(5), direct recruitment to any Grade II (Junior) post should be conducted through an examination or interview by the Commission. The petitioners claim the current process contravenes this rule.

They further accused the MPSC of favoritism, stating that despite being qualified, their names were excluded from the select list.
