Meghalaya Govt ends decades-old land dispute in Sohra, Transfers 128 acres to Hima Sohra

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has moved to resolve a land dispute that has lingered for decades by handing over 128 acres at Saitsohpen in Sohra Civil Sub-Division to the Elaka of Hima Sohra.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, after chairing a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, announced that the decision was based on the recommendations of a committee led by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. The committee had been holding consultations with stakeholders for over a year and a half to find a permanent solution to the long-standing conflict.

“Approximately 128 acres of land will be handed over to the Elaka, while the remaining portion will continue to be with the Government Administrative Department (GAD) and the state government,” Sangma told reporters.

The dispute traces its roots back to the British era, with the Elaka asserting ownership over the land on the strength of historical records and long-term occupation. Sangma noted that residents and the Elaka had been in possession of parts of the land for decades—even before Meghalaya attained statehood.

“Based on these records, detailed discussions were held with the Elaka, and we have now reached a conclusion,” he said. “With this decision, the long-pending issue between the Elaka and the GAD department will hopefully be resolved. A formal agreement with the stakeholders will follow to ensure a permanent settlement.”
