Shillong: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has given the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) a 10-day deadline to amend AD Rule 128, warning that the party will resort to other means to pressure the Council if the demand is not met.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, KHNAM Working President Thomas Passah said the party had waited for several hours to meet the Chief Executive Member (CEM), but could not do so due to the large number of people queued up to apply for trading licences. He added that the CEM was likely occupied with these matters.
Passah stated that the party’s attempt to meet the CEM followed reports from the District Council indicating that instead of amending only AD Rule 128, it intends to review and amend the entire set of AD Rules. This would involve constituting an expert committee to examine all the rules, rather than focusing specifically on Rule 128.
He further said that since they were unable to meet the CEM, the party resubmitted its letter regarding AD Rule 128. He noted that KHNAM has submitted multiple letters and made several attempts to seek a meeting, but without success.
In light of this, KHNAM has now set a 10-day deadline for the District Council and has decided not to pursue further meetings. Instead, the party warned it would adopt other methods to compel the Council to act on the matter.
