Shillong: The Federation of Khasi Jaiñtia and Garo People (FKJGP) has welcomed the GHADC’s decision to allow only tribal candidates to contest council elections, calling it a key step to protect indigenous rights.
FKJGP president Dundee Cliff Khongsit thanked GHADC members for passing the resolution and also appreciated the Meghalaya government and Governor C.H. Vijayashankar for approving it.
The federation has now urged the Khasi Hills (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills (JHADC) councils to take similar steps and amend their rules.
Khongsit warned that if such laws are not strengthened, indigenous communities could lose control over their own institutions.
He also called on both councils to hold special sessions and act quickly to safeguard tribal identity.
