SHILLONG: The Meghalaya government will soon write to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), asking them to introduce amendments to their Autonomous District (AD) Rules to bar non-tribals from participating in MDC elections.
The move follows the Governor’s approval of a similar amendment by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). Deputy Chief Minister in charge of District Council Affairs (DCA), Prestone Tynsong, said the GHADC amendment was made under Rule 8 of the AD Rules by inserting the term “Only Scheduled Tribe,” restricting election participation exclusively to tribal candidates.
On the GHADC’s tenure, Tynsong said the extension will continue for now, as the electoral roll still needs thorough revision despite the rule amendment. He added that a detailed meeting is scheduled for tomorrow to review the matter, after which necessary directions will be issued to the GHADC.
