The Executive Member (EM) in charge of Trade in KHADC, Gigur Myrthong, stated that monitoring the licenses of commercial vehicles (local taxis) is challenging, as vehicles driven by non-locals are often registered under a Khasi name.
He explained that while non-locals must obtain a trading license before acquiring a permit, inspections by KHADC often reveal documents registered under Khasi names, complicating the verification process.
On September 25, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), through its Enforcement Department, conducted checks on taxis operated by non-locals in parts of Shillong. However, the operation concluded without any significant outcome, as all vehicles were registered under Khasi names, resulting only in traffic disruptions.
When asked for further details, Gigur mentioned that KHADC has formally written to the District Transport Office (DTO), advising that permits should only be issued to non-locals who have obtained a valid trading license from KHADC.
He also urged any Khasi who sell vehicles to non-locals to ensure that ownership is legally transferred so as to prevent misuse.
The EM also asserted that the Council will continue vehicle inspections and will collaborate with the State Police to ensure effective enforcement.
