Shillong: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) hospital has once again make headlines for medical negligence after another case of alleged medical negligence after a 23-year-old patient being treated in the hospital died from unknown causes.

The family members expressed their discontent with the hospital authorities, as they conducted an operation on the 23-year-old patient without obtaining consent from the family or informing them about the sickness. According to the family members, NEIGRIHMS authorities performed the operation by simply stating that there was something in her intestines.

They further claimed that after the operation, the patient was immediately shifted to the ICU room without the family members’ knowledge. The family members stated that they had not met any doctors from January 17 until January 22. However on January 23 at around 9 PM the patient was declared dead by the hospital authority.

The family members accused the hospital staff of neglecting the patient, even though the 23-year-old had complained about not being able to breathe properly. They narrated that the patient had written a letter before passing away, describing all the negligence by the hospital staff and authorities at the ICU.

What angered the family members is that after the hospital pronounced the patient’s death, they only issued a death certificate without providing any other details to explain the cause of death, further fueling the family members’ frustration.
