‘Mawpoiñ’ Khasi part of Traditional Games to showcase in Meghalaya Games 2024

Shillong: The upcoming 5th edition of Meghalaya Games 2024 will showcase three traditional sports, each representing the three major tribes cum regions of the state – Khasi Hills, Jaiñtia Hills, and the Garo Hills.

Working President of the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA), John Kharshiing, revealed that, for the first time, the event will feature traditional games representing Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills.

Adding that Mawpoiñ will be the traditional game from Khasi Hills.

These three traditional sports will take centre stage during the opening ceremony, adding a cultural dimension to the sporting extravaganza.

Scheduled to take place from January 15 to 20 in Tura, the Meghalaya Games 2024 will be kicked off by President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on the inaugural day.

It is to be noted that the three traditional games were introduced following the advice and encouragement from Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma.

Over 3000 athletes across 22 disciplines are expected to take part in the Meghalaya Games 2024, this year.
