Shillong: Former Mawsynram MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang officially joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Wednesday after resigning from the BJP party.
Shangpliang who won the 2018 Assembly Election from the Congress Party, has then joined the AITC along with the 12 deserted MLAs of congress. However, Shangpliang joined the Saffron Party months before the 2023 Assembly Election.
On Wednesday, Shangpliang received a warm welcome at the party headquarters in Shillong from Chief Minister and Party President Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister and National Vice President Prestone Tyngsong, Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Urban Sniawbhalang Dhar, and other party officials. Former Chief Minister and current Government Adviser, Dr. DD Lapang, also graced the event and extended a warm welcome to HM Shangpliang.
CM Conrad K. Sangma took to social media, writing, “NPP welcomes Former MLA from Mawsynram, Shri Himalaya M Shangpliang, to the NPP family. Shri Hima has been an active leader, voicing concerns of the people of the State, and will be a great addition to the NPP in furthering our mission & vision for Meghalaya.”
In his speech after officially joining the party, Himalaya M. Shangpliang highlighted that it was the development programs and initiatives aimed at uplifting the youth and farmers of the state, introduced by the NPP-led MDA government, that motivated him to join the party.
He also announced that he, along with 3000 supporters from Mawsynram, has joined the NPP, a move warmly welcomed by Mawsynram MDC and Block President Alvin Sawkmie.
