Shillong: State Power Minister, Abu Taher Mondal, announced on Friday that the preliminary assessments reports from IIT Guwahati indicate that the Umiam Bridge is in good condition however, the bridge bearings of the Umiam Bridge will require replacement, therefore during this process, the public will be duly informed.
Speaking to reporters, Mondal noted that the physical inspection conducted by IIT Guwahati have stated to be sound. However, to ensure its structural integrity, further testing will be conducted, he added.
Furthermore, the Power Department has established a joint committee comprising engineers from MeECL and PWD to review the report and engage in discussions with the department.
Mondal emphasized that when the Umiam Bridge is lifted, traffic will come to a halt, with no vehicle movement permitted for 8 hours. Afterward, only light vehicles will be allowed.
He also clarified, “During the lowering of the bridge, traffic will not be allowed to pass. Following the bridge’s return to its original position, traffic will be permitted, but heavy vehicles will remain restricted,” as per the Power Minister’s information.
