KHADC examining the powers which allows it to put up toll gates

SHILLONG, July 07: The Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Titosstarwell Chyne has clearly stated that there no illegal toll gates being put by the Council and added that the Executive Committee too has taken the responsibility to make arrangements about putting up toll gates as per the powers vested on the District Council.

The CEM said this in response to the question presented by the MDC of Mylliem, Ronnie V.Lyngdoh, and from the CEM’s side he also informed that the KHADC has not yet sought permission from the Ministry of Road Transport to put up toll gates along the highways.

With regards to the presence of KHADC toll gates, he said that it cannot be denied that the KHADC has put up a beat office of the forest department as per the law of the Council, and also to check on indiscriminate felling of trees under the boundary of the Council as directed by the Supreme Court from 1986.

Chyne further informed that the Government had directed the District Council to shut down all toll gates and in response the KHADC also gave a clarification to the Government after which the Chief Minister of Meghalaya also called a meeting and now the Council is sending a list of places where it is required to put up beat offices to the Government.
