Encroachment on Government land by public in Williamnagar pushes Government to decide on leasing plots of land

SHILLONG, June 27: The Cabinet of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Government has decided to correct the encroachment on Government property by the public in two localities including Balsrigittim and Warimagre in Williamnagar, East Garo Hills District.

The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K.Sangma while speaking to media persons after the meeting ended said that in 2002-03, a decision had been taken by the then Cabinet to come to an agreement with the illegal settlers in the Government property in Williamnagar, however since 2003 till now, that decision has not been brought into effect.

He said that this time the Government has decided to implement this decision of the former Government in 2 localities, Balsrigittim and Warimagre, which have about 1200 households. He said that the resolution is for the Government to sign a long term lease agreement with those households, and added that the ownership rights of the property will remain with the Government.

The Chief Minister said that the property to be given out on lease is not more than 10,000 sq/ft for one household and the lease price will be as per the land valuation of the GHADC, and will be calculated as per the area of the land.
