SHILLONG, June 17: The Meghalaya State Women Commission (MSCW) has strongly condemned the negligence of the police in connection with the FIR filed against Joefreeson Jana who eventually killed his two biological children.

As per the statement of the Chairperson of the MSCW, Phidalia Toi, 3 days before the incident took place, the accused had physically assaulted his wife on the street for which an FIR was also filed with the police, however, the police neglected the report. On this incident, the Commission has decided to file a complaint before the Home Minister of Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui.

The Chairperson informed that the wife of Jana had filed an FIR against him in Rynjah Police Station on the 27th of May alleging that her husband had physically assaulted her on the street while she was returning from work, however the police brushed it aside as being only a matter of spousal quarrel.

She said that this inaction of the police against Jana led to the heartbreaking incident on the two children which could have been avoided if the police had taken some action against him.She said that may be his action in killing his children is a revenge against their mother who filed an FIR against him.

The Coordinator of the Meghalaya State Women Commission, Annie Sohtun said that in such cases of domestic violence, the police should send the case to the one stop centre for intervention, however that was not done.

Sohtun said that the mother of the two children should have been helped and emergency protection should have been provided to her as per Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.
