RAKKAM SUGGESTS ASSEMBLY PROCEEDINGS TO BE HELD IN THE KHASI AND GARO LANGUAGE OCCASIONALLY

SHILLONG, March 17: The MLA of Rongara- Siju, Rakkam A.Sangma today in the Assembly expressed that proceedings in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly should be held in the Khasi and Garo language occassionally. He said that using one’s local language will preserve and uplift the langauges of the State.

The demand to include the Khasi and Garo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution is pending, and today on the last day of the Budget Session of the State, the MLA from West Shillong, Mohendro Rapsang presented a question on the usage of the Khasi and Garo language in the District Councils under the Sixth Schedule.

Responding to the question, Minister incharge of District Council Affairs, Lahkmen Rymbui informed that the usage of languages is different, while including them in the Eighth Schedule is a completely different matter.

He said that the demand to include the Khasi and Garo language in the Eighth Schedule is still pending for examination by the Government of India.
