THOUSANDS OF ASHA WORKERS RALLY TO DEMAND PAYMENT OF PENDING DUES, THREATEN TO STAY OVERNIGHT OUTSIDE THE SECRETARIAT IF DEMANDS ARE LEFT UNHEARD

SHILLONG, March 04: ASHA workers under the Meghalaya ASHA Workers Union( MAWU), today the 4th of March,2022 rallied in thousands with the intention of moving forward to the Secretariat building to demand the payment of their dues from the Government that have been left unpaid for about 2 years. However, due to the ongoing Budget Session in the Legislative Assembly, they marched on instead to Malki Ground, Shillong.

The ASHA workers and helpers gathered today from across the State including the Khasi- Jaiñtia and Garo Hills for a protest which started with a mass rally from the compound of the MTC office in Khyndailad and culminating in Malki Ground, while displaying placards on which were inscribed demands for the Government to pay up all pending dues and to increase their wages.

The ASHA workers’ public rally today was held to demand payment of dues pending from the year 2020 and also to increase their wages from ₹66 per day to ₹300 per day.

The leaders of the MAWU informed that they have already submitted a letter seeking to meet with the Minister in charge of the Health Department, James P.K Sangma today and if the Minister refuses to meet with them, they have threatened to move towards the Secretariat building and if need be, to also stay overnight outside the highest office of the State Government if their demands are left unheard.
