Crushed & Destroyed! Car hit by boulders on Pynursla road | Passengers escape unhurt

HEADLINES

Shillong: A major accident was narrowly averted on the Shillong–Pynursla–Dawki road near Pomlum village on Wednesday night when a Maruti 800 was crushed by boulders that suddenly rolled down from above. Fortunately, all passengers managed to escape without injury, though the vehicle was badly damaged.

According to reports, the car was descending around late evening when heavy rocks tumbled down from a construction site where road cutting work was underway. The sudden rockfall left the vehicle mangled, but those inside acted quickly and got out in time, preventing what could have been a tragic loss of life.

Authorities had earlier issued warnings about the dangerous condition of the stretch due to incessant rainfall and soil loosening. The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Pynursla had even issued an order on Wednesday restricting traffic movement from Laitlyngkot to Lyngkyrdem as a precautionary measure against landslides.

Despite these warnings, the area remains hazardous. Continuous rainfall has made the soil fragile, raising the risk of further rockslides and landslips, making travel extremely unsafe during the monsoon.

Locals have urged the authorities and the construction company to step up safety measures and ensure immediate road clearance, while also appealing to travellers to avoid the stretch during heavy rains.
