Congress Considers Withdrawing Support from NPP-Led Executive Committee in KHADC

The Congress party, currently holding two MDC seats in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), is contemplating withdrawing from the Khasi Hills Democratic Front (KHDF), the coalition led by the NPP that runs the council’s executive committee.

During a meeting held today at Congress Bhavan in Shillong, Congress supporters and key members voiced their opinion that the party should pull out from the executive committee led by the NPP in KHADC.

Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President, Vincent H Pala, stated that the Congress had initially joined the district council coalition to contribute to the proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule, allowing the party to offer its insights. He acknowledged the growing demand within the party to sever ties with the NPP in KHADC and mentioned that the final decision would be left to the party president and the MDCs, although the party can only offer suggestions, with the Parliamentary Party leader having the authority to make the final call.

Deputy CEM of KHADC, Bah Pynshngaiñ N Syiem, pointed out that over the past year, the Congress, as part of the executive committee, had made significant contributions to KHADC, including the passage of several important Bills. He explained that the collaboration with the NPP within KHADC was aimed at benefiting the public by expediting key issues. However, he also admitted that there are increasing calls for the Congress to withdraw from the executive committee, and the meeting today has suggested that further discussions take place between the president and the MDCs to reach a final decision.
