HNYF Blocks trucks carrying 9 Tons of Coke from Umpung; Slam UDP MLAs

HEADLINES

Shillong: The Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Southern Border, together with the HNYF Dangar Balat Border Circle, on Monday decided to block trucks carrying 9 tons of coke from Umpung.

The decision by the HNYF came after a delegation met with the Executive Engineer of the PWD Roads Mawsynram Division to discuss the Umpung road and its condition.

Speaking to reporters, Kyllang S. Thongni said the EE had informed them that, according to an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, trucks are not allowed to carry 9 tons on the Umpung road under Section 163 BNSS. However, he added that in practice, coke trucks have been violating the order by carrying 15 to 20 tons. He clarified that the HNYF does not act arbitrarily but intervenes when the rules are blatantly ignored.

Thongni said the organization is committed to protecting the road connecting Mawsynram, Weiloi, and Shillong. He emphasized that those violating the rules include not only truck owners and coke transporters but also ordinary citizens.

He further explained that overloading causes significant damage to the road, forcing drivers to unfairly shift the cost of repairs onto residents. Mr. Thongni also criticized the UDP MLAs from Mawsynram and Ranikor constituencies, noting that they have remained silent on this issue, even though reports submitted to the minister indicate that the Balat road can be repaired.

He warned that the public will take stronger measures after 2028 if these leaders continue to ignore the matter. The people will also hold relevant authorities accountable to ensure that the government takes immediate steps to repair and maintain this vital road.
