East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Monday said that the deaths of a young man and woman whose bodies were found at a bus shelter in Lumsohphoh, Shillong, appear to be a case of suicide, though police are awaiting detailed reports before reaching a final conclusion.
The two were found dead on Sunday with ropes around their necks at the bus shelter, triggering an investigation by the police.
Speaking to reporters, Vivek Syiem said preliminary findings and visible evidence at the scene indicate that the deaths may have resulted from suicide.
“From the indications available so far, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, we are still awaiting detailed reports,” the SP said.
He added that if the deaths are ultimately confirmed as suicide, investigators will seek to establish the circumstances and reasons that may have driven the couple to take such a step.
According to the SP, an examination of the bodies did not reveal any external injuries apart from the ligature marks found around the necks, which are consistent with hanging.
Police investigations have also revealed that the two had been in a relationship for some time and were staying together in the area.
The deceased have been identified as Pronome Hajong, 22, a resident of Balat in South West Khasi Hills district, and Semanto Hajong, 21, from Ranikor in South West Khasi Hills district.
The bodies were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination, while police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Authorities are awaiting the final post-mortem and forensic reports before concluding the case.
