Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar assured that the construction of parking facilities at Phan Nonglait Park and Wards Lake will proceed without the cutting down of any trees. Responding to a query raised by North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum in the legislative assembly, Dhar emphasized that the government prioritizes environmental conservation in all its development projects, particularly in these two areas.
Dhar highlighted the severe traffic congestion in Shillong, noting that the average speed in the city has dropped to 17 km per hour, far below the ideal 25 km per hour. He assured that the government is committed to resolving this issue while ensuring that not a single tree will be harmed.
The Wards Lake area covers 16.2 acres, while Phan Nonglait Park spans 8.5 acres, with the planned parking facility occupying approximately 4.8 acres.
In response to another question from MLA Adelbert Nongrum regarding the reopening of the road at Them Iewmawlong, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the government is carefully considering the matter due to its implications for public safety and security. A decision on reopening the road will be made after thorough deliberation.
