Shillong — Voice of the People Party (VPP) President Ardent M. Basaiawmoit has demanded that Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma constitute an independent probe team to investigate the implementation of the MLA Scheme, beginning with the Nongkrem Constituency from the year 2008 onwards.
Ardent’s demand comes shortly after the Chief Minister questioned whether Opposition MLAs have been correctly implementing the scheme in their constituencies — a remark that the VPP chief said unfairly casts doubt on Opposition legislators.
He stated that if the government truly believes there are irregularities, it must order a transparent, constituency-wise investigation rather than making vague accusations. According to him, starting the inquiry from Nongkrem, his own constituency, would demonstrate fairness and accountability.
Ardent added that the VPP is prepared to cooperate fully with any independent inquiry and maintained that public funds must be used responsibly and without political bias.
