An under-trial prisoner (UTP), Leki Phawa from Wahiajer village, West Jaintia Hills, was found dead by suicide at Jowai District Jail and Correctional Home on Friday around 1:00 PM. Phawa, who was charged under Section 307 of the IPC, reportedly attempted suicide previously and succeeded this time.
His body underwent postmortem at Jowai Civil Hospital. This follows the death of another UTP in the same jail on November 28, prompting calls from families for a government-led investigation into the incidents.
