Tree Plantation held in Moosyiem Shangpung by Office of Soil & Water Conservation to observe World Environment Day

Jowai: The Office of the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation, Officer Jowai Territorial Division observed World Environment Day at Moosyiem Shangpung,West Jaiñtia Hills District on the topic, “Only One Earth, Living Sustainably in Harmony With Nature” in which Comingone Ymbon, local MLA who is also the Chairman of Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation was the Chief Guest in the presence also of the Doloi of Elaka Shangpung, Chanki Langbang and others.

Today the gathering was conducted by the DS&WCO, Jowai Territorial Division Jowai, T.War with speeches from Richardson Langbang,Waheh Chnong Moosyiem, E.Shylla, AS&WCO, Jowai Territorial Division, Jowai.

Speaking at the gathering, Ymbon said that tree plantation is of no use if we do not take care of the trees we planted, and from his end he has strongly urged the people who have planted the trees to take care of those trees so that they can grow and be of benefit otherwise there is no point.

Comingone Ymbon urged the people to immediately stop indiscriminate forest burning as the burning of forests results in major losses not only in losing trees and herbs but also lead to the extinction of animals and damage water bodies and rivers. He said that if there is no forest burning then there is no need to plant more trees since they will grow on their own, many fold in a year, therefore from his end he has also urged the government departments overseeing forests and rivers to take a decision by coming up with a law that will punish those involved in destroying forests by burning them and he also urged the people who are know or see these people destroying forests to immediately inform the Waheh Chnong or the government authorities.

The Chief Guest from his end, the officers of the Soil Department along with the school students participated in the tree plantation on the edges of the Moosyiem Ground and other places. Prizes were also distributed to the school students who participated in the Slogan writing competition. The day was made more entertaining with songs from the school students of Presbyterian Higher Secondary School, Shangpung and from Shlem Ïongki Sur Tynre, Shangpung.
