Shillong: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Dr. Mukul Sangma has stated that both the TMC and the Congress respect the Voice of the People’s Party’s (VPP) decision to remain independent within the opposition and not join forces in a formal alliance. However, he emphasized that they will continue to collaborate on important issues affecting the state and its people.
Dr. Mukul, who has been chosen as the Leader of the Opposition, highlighted that there is no rift within the opposition, but rather a difference in party-specific approaches. He noted that the focus remains on addressing matters concerning the state and the public rather than on forming an official coalition.
The TMC and Congress, which together hold six seats in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, have met the 10% requirement to appoint a Leader of the Opposition. Congress MLA Ronnie V. Lyngdoh has been appointed as the Chief Whip. Meanwhile, the VPP, with its four MLAs, has opted to remain separate from the formal opposition bloc but will work in tandem on shared concerns.
The decision by the VPP not to align formally with the TMC and Congress comes as the parties navigate the political landscape following the recent elections.
