SHILLONG, July 30: The Central Government has not given up its intention to mine uranium from Meghalaya. This was revealed in the response of the Minister(Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Dr.Jitendra Singh in the Parliament this week.
After the uranium issue emerged again in the Parliament, pressure groups which include the KSU and the FKJGP have sent their messages to strongly oppose the long last aim of the Indian Government.
On being queried about this today the Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Prestone Tynsong stated straightforwardly that the State Government has resolved and is fully committed to not provide any form of avenue for uranium to be mined in Meghalaya, however, he also said that land ownership is held by private individuals, and it is the choice of the land owners, while adding that if the Government and the land owners work in tandem, no avenue will be provided for uranium to be mined.
