Successful Farmer from West Khasi Hills Earns Lakhs and Creates Jobs for Villagers

HEADLINES

West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya – In the village of Mawduh, 63-year-old Bah Spingwell Kharmarshra has made a name for himself as a successful farmer, generating significant income from strawberry farming and creating jobs for his community in Nongstoiñ.

With the support of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, journalists recently visited Bah Spingwell’s 2-hectare farm, where he cultivates strawberries with his wife, Kong Lucy Iawran, and their children. Since starting his venture in 2014 with training from the Horticulture Department, Bah Spingwell has grown five strawberry varieties, including popular types such as Korean, Camarosa, and California.

Bah Spingwell provides his organically-grown plants at affordable prices, selling seedlings to other farmers at just ₹5 each, a significant reduction from standard market rates. His methods include using organic fertilizers like cocopit and vermicompost, produced from local waste and natural materials.

On average, Bah Spingwell earns over ₹3 lakh per year from strawberry farming, an impressive figure that underscores the potential of agriculture in the region. Additionally, he employs local villagers, paying each worker ₹200 per day plus meals, fostering economic growth and community welfare.
