North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, responded to recent student demands for the dismissal of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar, explaining that their removal is complex and cannot be done solely by request. He noted that these appointments were made following a thorough process, not through election or arbitrary selection, making it challenging to reverse without specific grounds.
Speaking to reporters, Prof. Shukla emphasised that open dialogue is key to resolving the ongoing issues at NEHU. He expressed willingness to engage with the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHESU) and other concerned groups to address their grievances.
In response to letters from NEHESU, NEHUTA (the Teachers’ Association), and NEHUNSA (the Non-Teaching Staff Association) to government bodies, including the Office of the President, Prof. Shukla clarified that the Ministry of Education or the President would appoint an inquiry team if any significant mismanagement concerns were raised. He confirmed no such directive had been received.
He reiterated that government-appointed officials cannot be dismissed without proper investigation and justified reasons. “Even if valid reasons arise, a thorough investigation must precede any decision,” he added.
Regarding the vacant post of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for the College Development Council, Prof. Shukla said he has offered the position to several professors, though none have accepted it yet. He remains committed to finding willing faculty to manage this role, including the oversight of the guest houses.
The Vice Chancellor also mentioned the ongoing recruitment process for non-teaching staff. NEHU has issued an advertisement and has engaged the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct the examination. Prof. Shukla shared that once the Registrar’s office is accessible, the files required to proceed with recruitment can be retrieved.
Addressing the demand for appointing two Pro-Vice-Chancellors—one in Tura and another in Shillong—Prof. Shukla explained that NEHU has formally reached out to the Ministry of Education for guidance. While he awaits a response, he intends to remind the Ministry and, if no reply is received by November, proceed with local appointments to fulfill these roles.
