Shillong: Mawkyrwat MLA, Renikton L Tongkhar, expressed concern in the legislative assembly today that residents of Photjaud-Tynrai-Mawbidong are threatening to protest if the long-awaited road is not constructed. Tongkhar highlighted that the area, comprising five villages, is in dire need of this road, which has been delayed due to water damage and the lack of proper infrastructure.
Tongkhar urged the government to ensure the road is built, even suggesting that the state government fund the project if central funds are not available. In response, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who oversees the PWD, stated that the road project has been included in PMGSY III. The project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been approved by the state and is now with the central government. Tynsong assured that efforts are being made to secure the necessary funding and complete the project within the current year.
Tynsong further clarified that the road project has been prioritized by the Ministry of Rural Development, and the only remaining step is the allocation of funds. Under PMGSY III, the central government has approved the construction of 1,250 km of roads in Meghalaya for the year 2024-25. According to PMGSY guidelines, any village with a population of 250 or more is eligible for road construction under this scheme.
