Prof. Lakhon Kma, President of the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHTA), has accused the state government of ignoring the protests by students and teachers at NEHU, suggesting that it might be due to an understanding with the BJP-led central government.
Speaking today, Prof. Kma highlighted that the protests against the actions of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, have been intense, yet the state government seems reluctant to make any decisions, likely to appease the central government. He added that despite the actions of the Vice Chancellor, it remains unclear why he has not been removed or sent back to his home state.
Prof. Kma also noted that the recent appointments of two Pro Vice Chancellors are a delayed move, emphasising that if needed, an Acting Vice Chancellor could have been appointed instead. These appointments were made by the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.
He urged that teachers should not be used as tools to shield the Vice Chancellor, as the protests led by students and faculty are not about the Pro Vice Chancellors. Additionally, he stated that the teachers and students may no longer need the Vice Chancellor and question his ability to effectively govern from a distance.
