Shillong: RTI activist Disparsing Rani has slammed the Meghalaya Police for failing to respond for over a year to his Right to Information (RTI) application seeking details on which government officials are authorized to use tinted glasses, install sirens, and on the fines imposed on private vehicles with tinted windows.
Addressing reporters at the Shillong Press Club on Friday, September 12, 2025, Rani alleged that the police seem more interested in harassing and violating the rights of citizens rather than upholding transparency. He revealed that since September 5, 2024, he has been awaiting a reply to his RTI request, but the department has remained silent.
He demanded that the police department furnish the information immediately, warning that failure to do so would compel them to pay penalties of ₹250 per day as mandated under RTI law.
Rani further pointed out that he has also not received replies from the Urban Affairs Department regarding revenue collection from parking at Them Ïewmawlong, nor on his query about the Central government’s scheme to install new streetlights in Meghalaya. Despite two months having passed since the application, no response has been provided, he said.
