Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang raised concerns in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly over the recent road markings in front of the Secretariat, questioning whether they comply with the Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines and whether government approval was obtained, considering the stretch is part of a National Highway.
Marbaniang pointed out that instead of easing movement, the road markings have contributed to traffic congestion, making the area more crowded for vehicles.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who oversees the Urban Affairs Department, clarified that the markings were implemented as per regulations. He stated that the work was carried out by the Urban Affairs Department in coordination with the PWD, and the initiative was being tested to assess its effectiveness. If successful, similar markings might be introduced in other locations.
Dhar also emphasized that road markings must be white and bright as per Indian Road Congress standards.
Adding to the discussion, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma mentioned that the initiative was undertaken as part of the Shillong Urban Mobility Policy. He explained that the markings were intended to facilitate smoother pedestrian and vehicular movement near the Secretariat. Additionally, the government has been monitoring daily traffic patterns to address congestion and improve Shillong’s overall traffic management.
