Shillong, Oct 11: Meghalaya joined the global observance of World Hospice & Palliative Care Day 2025 with a special programme held at the Oncology Department, Civil Hospital, Shillong, focusing on the theme “Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care.” The event brought together healthcare professionals, caregivers, patients, and dignitaries to advocate for compassionate, holistic, and inclusive healthcare for all.

Dr. Neela E. Kharsahnoh, Director of Health Services (MCH & FW), graced the occasion as Chief Guest. In her keynote address, she emphasised that palliative care extends beyond medical treatment — it embodies empathy, dignity, and emotional support. “Palliative care is not just about managing pain. It’s about restoring dignity, hope, and comfort to patients and their families,” she said, adding that access to quality cancer treatment is now more attainable for all, regardless of financial status.
Guest of Honour Dr. Carol Langrai, Joint Director of Health Services, highlighted the importance of home-based palliative care, proposing a model where caregivers visit patients weekly to offer comfort and assistance. She also noted that the Central Government has expanded palliative services to sub-centres, enabling patients in rural areas to access care closer to home.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. A.M. Paswet, Joint Director of Health Services (S.S), Civil Hospital, who underscored the vital role of palliative care in ensuring dignity and quality of life.
Heartfelt testimonials from patients and caregivers moved the audience, while the staff of the Oncology Department performed a touching rendition of “Song of Hope & Healing.” The AYUSH Department conducted a therapeutic yoga session, highlighting the integration of physical and emotional healing.
The event concluded with gift distributions to palliative patients by dignitaries and a vote of thanks by Heiporly Talang, DPC, NPPC. The observance reaffirmed Meghalaya’s commitment to building a compassionate healthcare system that prioritises human dignity and holistic well-being.
Dignitaries present included Dr. Neela E. Kharsahnoh, Dr. Carol Langrai, Dr. A.M. Paswet, Heiporly Talang, Dr. A. Mawlong (Head, Oncology Department), and officers from allied departments.
