In a significant border development, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), accompanied by heavy machinery and Assam police personnel, reportedly attempted to demolish a road in Khanduli, West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya. The Meghalaya government promptly intervened and halted the action.
Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar, Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee on Border Issues, confirmed that the Regional Committee had deliberated on the encroachment attempts by KAAC. He stated that the West Jaintia Hills District authorities had strongly urged Assam officials to cease any road destruction in the area.
Shri Dhar further explained that such incidents arise frequently in disputed areas along the Assam-Meghalaya border, but any developmental activities in these zones must be preceded by mutual consultation and notification of district authorities in Meghalaya.
The incident, which occurred on December 16, was captured on video and widely circulated on social media. The footage showed two excavators working on a road in Khanduli, which connects to Hamren in West Karbi Anglong. Reports indicate that the activity was accompanied by police and locals from Assam.
Timely intervention by Khanduli village leaders managed to stop the ongoing demolition, with Meghalaya officials ensuring the suspension of further actions by Assam authorities.
