The 15-day deadline issued by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to the state government over five key demands ended on Tuesday, with the student organisation warning that it would intensify its agitation through a series of programmes.
The KSU Mawprem Circle held a public meeting at Mawprem Karbom on Tuesday evening, where KSU Central Body Vice-President Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and Assistant General Secretary Pynshai Rani addressed the gathering.
The meeting at Mawprem, Laitumkhrah and Nongmynsong was attended by KSU Central Body leaders, office-bearers and members of various units members, as well as local residents.
The five demands raised by the KSU include greater transparency and reforms in recruitment through the District Selection Committee (DSC) and the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
The union has also called for the full implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, particularly to address the entry of non-indigenous people into the state.
Another demand is for amendments to the Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety and Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020, while the union has also sought reforms in the recruitment process at NEIGRIHMS.
The KSU has further demanded the cancellation of the public hearing concerning Shree Cement and called for the removal or suspension of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and officials of the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, along with the initiation of departmental proceedings against them.
With the 15-day deadline now over, the KSU has indicated that it will intensify its programmes and agitation on these issues, which it maintains are of concern to the indigenous community.
