SHILLONG, May 24: The High Powered Committee(HPC) incharge of the construction of the new Assembly building of the State, today decided to handover to a third party audit in order to ascertain the main cause of the dome collapsing on Monday, the 22nd of May.
On the 23rd of May, the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly,Metbah Lyngdoh in the presence also of the Chief Minister, Conrad K.Sangma, the company which was assigned the project, along with the engineers of the PWD(Building) inspected the collapse dome, which was followed by a meeting of the High Powered Committee in which the leader of the Opposition, Dr.Mukul Sangma was also present.
Speaking with media persons, Metbah Lyngdoh said that the HPC has decided to deny entry of outsiders into the area while the spot where the incident occured is to be covered so as to prevent water from seeping into the construction. Furthermore, he also informed that the Committee has also resolved to hand over to one of the IITs, maybe IIT Guwahati, IIT Kolkata or IIT Delhi to look into the reasons leading to the collapse of the dome, and this will depend on the readiness of one of these IITs.
He said that the task of the third party audit is also to look into the safety of the other parts of the building before the construction can be continued again.He said that the HPC has not given not set a deadline for the enquiry but has urged that the enquiry report be sent at the earliest.
Furthermore, Lyngdoh said that the HPC will meet again to take a decision after the report of from the third party audit is received, and until the completion of the enquiry, no debris shall be removed or touched from the spot where the dome had collapsed.
