The four Himas near the Meghalaya-Assam border—Mylliem, Jirang, Nongkhlaw, and Nongspung—have filed a formal complaint with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
The Himas have raised concerns about ongoing encroachments and disruptions to development work in the border areas by individuals from Assam.
Paiem Hamberley Wahlang, the Syiem of Jirang Hima, reported that despite ongoing border negotiations between Meghalaya and Assam, illegal activities, including smuggling and land claims by people from Assam, continue unabated. He urged the KHADC to take decisive action to address these issues and protect the land.
In response, CEM Pyniaid Sing Syiem assured the Himas that the Council would act on their complaint. He has directed Deputy CEM Bah Pynshngaiñ N Syiem to consult with the Council’s legal experts to ensure the protection of land within KHADC’s jurisdiction and to address the border issues effectively.
