HANM extends support to agitating Adhoc teachers, urges Govt to act swiftly

HEADLINES

Shillong: The Hynñiewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), led by its president Lamphrang Kharbani, visited the protesting Adhoc school teachers at Madan Malki on Monday evening to express solidarity with their indefinite sit-in demonstration. The teachers, under the banner of the Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM), have been demanding a salary hike and the upgradation of Adhoc schools to the deficit system.

Speaking at the protest site, Kharbani assured that HANM would stand by the teachers in every step of their agitation. He described teachers as the backbone of the nation and the torchbearers of knowledge, stressing that lawmakers themselves would not hold office without the role of teachers.

He urged Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to immediately address the teachers’ “genuine demands,” cautioning that continued government inaction could disrupt students’ education and the livelihood of teachers.

Meanwhile, the protesting teachers, through their vice president, thanked HANM for its support. The agitation entered its eighth day on Monday.

It may be noted that Adhoc teachers under FASTOM launched their protest on September 22, staging an indefinite sit-in at Madan Malki. However, the state government has yet to respond to their demands.
