Esron Marweiñ, close associate of the (late) H.S. Shylla, has announced his intention to contest the upcoming MDC election as an independent candidate from the Nongthymmai constituency.
Explaining his decision on Thursday, Marweiñ cited the deteriorating condition of the District Council as his primary motivation. He added that he has assessed the situation and concluded that the presence of Para 12 (a) in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution is the reason for the current state of the District Council.
He also added that the Para 12 (a) undermines the laws of the District Council by subordinating its laws to those of the state government.
Marweiñ expressed his strong opinion that removing Para 12 (a) is essential to restore the District Council’s autonomy and effectiveness.
When asked why he chose to run as an independent candidate, Marweiñ explained that he does not wish to align with any political party. He highlighted the lack of legal provisions preventing MDCs from forming their own parties, which, he believes, diminishes the influence of mainstream political parties in the council.
