Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Seng Khasi College inaugurated

Shillong: Seng Khasi College, Jaiaw, Shillong on the 28th of August inaugurated its Golden Jubilee Celebrations at a function held at the Hall of the College.

The Chief Guest at the function who inaugurated the celebrations was the President of the Seng Khasi Kmie, Don Kupar Dkhar (Retd IAS) in the presence also of the 3 Vice Presidents of Ka Jylli Pyrkhat Kam(JPK), Seng Khasi Kmie, O.Pyngrope, Wallamphang Roy, Arwan S.Tariang, the President and Secretary of the Governing Body, Banteilang S.Rumnong and Richard H. Dkhar, former Principals, the teachers, students, and others.

Extracting from the speech of D.K.Dkhar on the short history of the college, the College was established on the 28th of August, 1973 at the Hall of the present Iing Seng Khasi in Mawkhar as an Evening College.

At the start, the College had about 34 students and it was in October of 1973 that Pre-University classes were allowed to be held only in 1987 was a permanent affiliation granted by the North-Eastern Hill University and in 1983 it was shifted to its present location now in Weiking, Jaiaw, Shillong.

Turning to the founders, the learned men from the Seng Khasi who took on the task as leaders to start the College were A.S Khongphai, R.T Rymbai, Late Rubi Diengdoh who served as the first Presidents, Secretaries of the College along with other members who all worked tirelessly in establishing the College which has now turned into a well established College and is now 49 years with only one more year hence for it to reach the milestone of its 50th year, and now the College has courses in Arts and Commerce for Class XI and XII and Honours Courses for the undergraduate Arts.

One of the goals which the elders of Seng Khasi while establishing this College had in mind was to help and ensure education is received at low fees in part to lead or guide the youths from the rural areas who are thirsty for knowledge and growth in their lives, with this aim being the important objective till date which continues to burn bright as a continued practice.

Prior to the start of the function, prayers and adoration were offered by the Riew Tymmen Riew San of the Seng Khasi Kmie, Hambok Kharmawphlang followed by the hoisting of the College flag by the Chief Guest, Don Kupar Dkhar.

After this the official function was held in the Hall of the College with the welcome speech being delivered by Wandur B.Rynjah, Principal, followed by speeches from the President and Secretary of the Governing Body, B.S Rumnong and Richard H.Dkhar, candles being lighted as a sign of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations being inaugurated which was led by the Chief Guest and other prominent members and also former Principals and retirees of the College, songs sung by students, the traditional music academy and alumni of the college and the vote of thanks was delivered by the Vice Principal, Herina Dohtdong and on this day, the Chief Guest also cut the ribbon to open or inaugurate the gym.

As the senior leader of the Seng Khasi Kmie, Don Kupar Dkhar was filled with happiness that in the 49 years since the establishment of the College it has developed and expanded in many aspects such as a Computerised Library, Floodlit Basketball Court, a gym, a canteen and what is more delightful is that the number of students has increased to thousands.

Don Kupar Dkhar took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to the present Principal, the teaching and non-teaching staff, especially the President and Secretary of the Governing Body who took upon themselves the heavy responsibility of carrying out the daily work of this College.
