Door-to-door electoral roll verification starts across East Khasi Hills

HEADLINES

The following is a rewritten and restructured version with a sharper news flow, improved readability, and the correct spelling of Baranwal:

Shillong, June 29: The East Khasi Hills district administration will begin a month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll from June 30, as directed by the Election Commission of India, with officials stressing that the exercise is aimed at improving the accuracy of voter records and not excluding eligible electors.

Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will carry out door-to-door verification at all 1,021 polling stations across the district. During the exercise, BLOs will distribute pre-filled self-enumeration forms to voters whose names already appear in the 2025 electoral roll.

He clarified that electors are not required to submit any documents during the initial stage of the revision. Voters only need to complete and return the self-enumeration form. Supporting documents will be sought only in a limited number of cases where additional verification is required, and adequate time will be given for submission.

Baranwal further said officials have been instructed to accept all relevant supporting documents, including certificates issued by churches and traditional headmen, instead of restricting verification to the Election Commission’s indicative list of 11 documents. The Electoral Registration Officer will examine each case based on the documents produced by the applicant.

Appealing for public cooperation, the Deputy Commissioner urged residents not to be apprehensive about the exercise, reiterating that the objective of the Special Intensive Revision is “to include and not to exclude” while ensuring a clean, accurate and error-free electoral roll.

The revised electoral roll is scheduled to be published on October 7, 2026.
