Shillong, Sept 13: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr. DD Lapang passed away at Bethany Hospital, Shillong, after a prolonged illness. He was 93. A towering figure in state politics, Lapang first entered the Assembly in 1972 representing Nongpoh constituency and served multiple terms until his retirement in 2018.
He served as Chief Minister on four occasions—1992–93, 2003, 2008, and 2009–10—though his tenures were often cut short by political instability. A lifelong Congress leader before joining the NPP in later years, Lapang was widely respected for his political acumen and administrative skills.
He is survived by his wife, Amethyst Lynda Jomes Blah, and family. His passing is being mourned as a great loss to Meghalaya, marking the end of an era in the state’s political history.
