FKJGP, KSU allege misuse of Khasi surnames by non-tribal in border areas

HEADLINES

The FKJGP Riwar Mihngi Circle and KSU South East Central Circle have submitted a complaint to the Sub-Divisional Officer of Pynursla Civil Sub-Division over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, urging authorities to ensure that non-citizens are not included as voters.

The two organisations claimed to have uncovered several cases of non-Khasis allegedly adopting Khasi surnames in villages along the India-Bangladesh border, a trend they said poses a threat to the indigenous Khasi community.

They urged the government and local authorities to exercise extreme caution and conduct thorough verification before enrolling individuals in the electoral rolls as part of the Election Commission of India’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision exercise.

FKJGP Riwar Mihngi Circle Secretary, Meborbaskhem Thabah, alleged that the organisations had identified individuals of non-Khasi origin who had adopted Khasi surnames despite both their parents being non-Khasis. He further claimed that some individuals with parents allegedly originating from Bangladesh had also assumed Khasi surnames while residing in villages along the international border.

The organisations said they had obtained details of several such cases and warned that the issue requires immediate attention from the authorities.

They have called on the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to urgently intervene, investigate the matter, and take appropriate action.
