Duwan Singh Syiem Bridge wears a new look, thanks to NEEPCO’s Swachhata initiative

With increasing tourist traffic to the gateway of Sohra (Cherrapunji), the Duwan Singh Syiem bridge has faced significant littering issues. In response, an Awareness Programme was held on September 17, 2024, with the Dorbar Shnong Dympep and other stakeholders to assess the problem and its causes.

NEEPCO’s Director (Personnel), Major General RK Jha (Retd.), visited the Dympep-Mawkdok valley on September 19 to engage with locals and tourists. Following discussions, NEEPCO decided to adopt the tourist hub for one year under the Swachhata Hi Sewa campaign. Plans for waste management and sustainable solutions are being developed in collaboration with the local community.

The initiative was officially launched on October 2, 2024, during the Swachhata Hi Divas celebrations at Dympep, where Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim inaugurated the illumination of the Duwan Singh Syiem bridge. Saplings were planted, and dustbins were distributed to vendors as part of the effort to maintain cleanliness.
